Principal Investigator: Caroline Shiboski, DDS, MPH, PhD

Investigators:
Pamela Den Besten, DDS, MS
Phillip Rosenthal, MD
Robert Mathias, MD

Specific Aim:

1)To Conduct a pilot cross-sectional study to investigate the prevalence of use of preventive dental care services before and after transplant surgery, and to identify co-factors an possible barriers associated with dental care utilization in a population of pediatric solid organ transplant recipients (renal transplant recipients (RTR) and liver transplant recipients (LTR)) at UCSF.

2) To explore the prevalence of unmet dental need, and the prevalence of oral mucosal diseases in relation to new generation immunosuppressants in this population.

Pediatric RTRs and LTRs visiting the outpatient post-transplant clinic at UCSF are being recruited at the time of one of their post-transplant follow-up visits. Pediatric patients waiting for a kidney or liver transplant are being recruited during the pre-transplant evaluation in the outpatient transplant unit.
