Directory

Principal Investigator: Jane A. Weintraub, DDS, MPH

Investigators:
Francisco Ramos-Gomez, DDS, MS, MPH
Bonnie Jue, DDS
Charles Hoover, PhD
Stuart Gansky, MS, DrPH

Specific Aim:

1. Among mothers of young children with and without early childhood caries (ECC) participating in the CAN DO fluoride varnish clinical trial, compare the proportions of mothers in each group with high levels of cariogenic bacteria (mutans streptococcus (MS) and lactobacilli) and other caries risk factors.

2. Pilot test data collection with mothers of children participating in the fluoride varnish clinical trial in preparation for the CAN DO Project 2,“MAYA”, a clinical trial being conducted by Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez testing a new caries management model in preventing ECC.

Mothers of participating children at the two clinical trial sites, San Francisco General Hospital Family Dental Center and the Chinatown Public Health Center will be recruited for this study. Trained staff will administer questionnaires and collect saliva from the women. A study dentist will conduct dental screenings and provide referrals for those needing dental care.
