Brief Summary:The purpose of this study is to determine if genetic factors make some children more susceptible to the development of dental caries. With the support and assistance of the San Francisco Head Start partners, children ages 3-5 are given a dental exam after they receive a snack. Oral brushings are collected at the time of the exam and gene expression pattern of the buccal cells is determined using the powerful GeneChip technology. The data are analyzed to see if the oral gene expression patterns in children who develop dental caries and those who are resistant to dental caries are different when they are exposed to sugary foods that promote caries formation.
